The original E type manufacturers plate will provide the original engine, body and transmission numbers. If this has been lost and you have the VIN number you can go to Heritage in Great Britain and obtain extensive information such as the above on an E type.
 
so then 1R13111 and 7R11919-9
this would signify a non-matching numbers car? correct?
when the numbers math then its a numbers marching car or do you need to do some sort of arithmatic to the numbers?
 
No, No math and no secret. The numbers are not chronological but are assigned at time of build.You must get that baseline {Heritage} data to determine if car numbers match in those cases where it is not provided on the vehicle.---Keoke
 
Go on a web search to Heritage, British Automobiles. They have every Jaguar produced and its history. What Keoke said is correct. An aside, if parts on a production line dont have a single partnumber, why would you expect to have an engine/transmission match?
 
also please note that the last digit on the engine number is compression ratio (7 8 or 9)

for all of you -8 guys out there you really need to try a drive a -9 car. the difference is quite large!
