So... It's been a while since I have had a running MGA. 1966 was when I had my last A...(1957 1500 - pictured in Avatar)... with many Bs in between...

My newly rebuilt A 1500 gets up to operating temperature really fast... as in a couple of minutes.... It does not overheat but I am a little concerned that it reaches 170 degrees so quickly. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif

Block bored, hot tanked, new water pump and a new thermostat (170 degree), flushed radiator...ad infinitum...
water, not antifreeze, in radiator at present.

I am not yet driving the car so this condition is when running at idle with some reving of engine... Runs well, although I am still fighting my charging system malfunction... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif


My Bs have been cold blooded and took forever to reach operating temp...It's been too long for me to remember what my first A did...

Any comments from A owners OR ????
 
I would put some AF in the system, and make sure that your cap is working properly. My B' takes about ten minutes to reach operating temp while sitting, about half that when I am running down the road.

As long as it is not overheating, I would not be terribly concerned.

I highly doubt that adding anti-freeze will slow down the warm up process. Anti-freeze has a lot less cooling capacity than pure water. I would expect the warm up process to be even faster after adding anti-freeze to the system.

I run a 75% distilled water, 25% anti-freeze mix in my daily driven 76 MGB. The anti-freeze is only in there for its anti-corrosive and lubrication properties. I'm usually up to full operating temps under 5 minutes of driving.
 
The only reason I suggested the AF was as you said, to keep the rust monsters at bay. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
 
I don't see any problem with warming up quickly so long as it doesn't run hot. The faster it warms up, the faster the oil will be able to lubricate critical components properly.
 
With the stock engine, I use to run 100 degrees hotter than the ambient temp.......

Always thought that was kinda-neat /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

(For temps 70-100F)

Thanks for your comments. I will stop worrying about the temp and move on to other things that need to be finished.

After three years of restoring, it looks as if I WILL be driving my A this summer. Just a few more major projects and several minor ones and on the road it goes... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banana.gif
