hey is anyone else in here motivated by the sound of a nissan v6? what about the power and technology of a lexus is350 mill? or the huge old school gm pushrods still seeing use in cars today (with variable valve timing as well in newer models)? or how 'bout that rover(?) v6 that powered the jag supercar, and group b rally cars? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

Those GM pushrods have a pretty nice sound...those 2.8 or 3.1 Cavaliers(late 80's early 90's versions) sound very nice with the proper exhaust(not a **** can).

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif whole heartedly! many a nice vehicle has been wrecked by that wicked device /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif.

hey and how about that old ferrari v6 that saw use in the dino? or the lancia stratos?

The 3800 is still in use, its a good reliable, long lasting engine. One of the few left with cast iron heads.
I think its due for replacement soon, though.

yessir it is! i gots me one in my '96 regal. but did you notice the 3.9 litre? or that new fangled high feature 3.6? i'm pretty sure the new 3.6 has a higher output than the 3.9! its too bad gm had to switch designs to make that kind of output though, i'm a fan of pushrods in gm cars, and that vvt for ohv looked promising.....

I have the 3800 in my wife's Olds Intrigue. It can sound nice, but the 3.5 OHC in my Toyota Avalon sounds much better.

You're thinking of the "Dino" six cylinder that was put into Dino 206/246 GTB and GTS, as well as Fiat Dinos and the Lacia Stratos. Fiat built its Dinos so that the engine could be homologated quickly for Formula II (or Formula B -- can't remember.) In any event the formula changed, and the engine wasn't used for racing. It is, however, one of the meanest sounding sixes ever made. At redline that sucker sounds like a LP recording of a banshee in a blender played at double speed.

The Z-car six is nicely mechanical.

The 3.2 in the M3 sounds mighty nice to, Esp. with the cold air intake in the WOT 6-7K RPM range.
Gotta love the 5.3 in the Landcruiser too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Sammy B I notice the K modle in the drive, My wife use to have a Plymouth Caravell with the turbo on it, The first time we drove it we kept looking around for the cop's due to the turbo whine, It was our first real time behind the wheel of a turbo...Alot of fun, But I hated that car, Too bad we got rearended by some drunk drivers /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ahhh, are we talking Plymouth Reliant and Dodge Aries K cars?

...If I had a million dollars - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Did someone say, "Dodge Aries K"???? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Used Dodge Aries K Commercial/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Hay Rob,

Don't laugh too hard. But if'n you've ever had an Aries K car (& I have) that’s still a pretty funny video. What a totally unremarkable vehicle if there ever was one. Only car that I've ever purchased brand new (in 85) that felt like "used" twenty minutes after leaving the dealer's lot. :p

As for the 2.2L engine. I think the video’s 22HP rating is a bit low & I seem to remember the rating to be actually about 95HP. Not a bad power plant in the right vehicle – I had a Dodge Rampage PU with a 5-speed that used the same motor and it was like a totally different vehicle. Same engine was used in the Dodge Daytona & has even been turbo charged. I believe there was even an Omni/Horizon that used the same engine and even one or two versions that received the Shelby treatment. Over looking the rubber band ah? Er? “Timing belt” that would let go without any warning at about 60K it was a pretty good engine.

While I detest the K-cars. Credit has to be given to the basic layout as it was used over & over again by Chrysler during those dark years. From entry level econo boxes to minivans & all the way up to their flag ship sedans. In fact the basic front wheel drive design DNA remained the same all the way up until recently when Chrysler/Dodge finally started building front engine rear wheel drive passenger cars again.

SWMBO's mum *gave* her a K-car. Aries. 2.2L... that thing hated me. She could drive it for weeks with no problems but if I just SAT in it something would let go. Lost brakes (MC) twice, timing belt, HEATER VALVE(!), a P/S pump, just about everything you'd ~expect~ an LBC to break. Never had as much trouble with an MGB as with that *thing*... Herself called it the Dodge Decrepid or Dodge Insipid.

I called it a lot of other things. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Didn't they make a "K-car" convertible? Was it their version of a sports car? hehehehe

Bret I know the motor well. I had a '80 Dodge Charger 2.2. It blew a head gasket while in my care. I discovered it had a Holley 2 bbl carb on it when I was changing the gasket. Both the intake and exhaust manifolds were on the back side of the motor against the fire wall. Just thinking about that thing gives me nightmares akin to Kenny's yota head job.

I changed the timing belt when I changed the headgasket. I don't think I've ever changed a timing belt as difficult as that car's since then.

When the clutch started to go, my mom had her BF of the time work on the car. The schlep didn't resecure the shifter linkage correctly when he was done and the linkage anchor on the top of the cross member pulled out of the soft metal they used, and the shifter never felt right since.

It was a fun car to drive despite the alarmingly large amounts of understeer that it had. Lots of luggage space in it, and sat 4 adults comfortably enough for a short road trip, but leg stretching breaks were very much needed for long trips. However, it certainly wasn't one of the much more desirable Shelby models... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonod.gif

Yes they did actually, although “Sports Car” would be a significant stretch of the vernacular.

I believe they used that platform for the Dodge 400, 600 & the overdone LeBaron all used the K-Car platform (82-88 I think) and offered convertibles.

Believe it or not I seem to recall that the LeBaron was the top selling convertible in the US for a number of years back then. But then there wasn’t a heck of a lot to chose from back then either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

the LaBaron was a purdy car even if it was a K-car. Sports car it wasn't, but definitely fit the bill of a cruiser. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pukeface.gif

...just a personal opinion, y'know. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif about the only thing cool by chrysler built since 1980 - the plymouth prowler... the viper... and as for "normal vehicles", the stuff they built with mitsubishi under the DSM label... The Conquest/Starion turbo is my favorite, followed distantly by the Talon/Eclipse/Laser turbos.
STARION%20GSR-2%20Fsml%20.jpg

Now that's a cool car ^ (sortof) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Sorry Kenny, But I've never been a fan of the Talon/Eclipse/Lasers. The Mit'o in fact looked kind of like one of those Cartoon Transformer Decepticons that my boys used to watch every Saturday morning when they where younger. Always half expected one to morph into some robot or something whenever I saw one on the road. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

But if we're talking regular passenger cars (not performance) and don't mind FWD Chrysler built some fairly nice rides in the late 90's.

While they'd of never been my first choice, I have had two Dodge Intrepids a 98' & 00' (1st & 2nd gen) and all things considered it was a heck of a lot more vehicle for the money than either Ford or GM was putting out those years.

When I was given the choice of company cars to chose from (besides a couple of minivans) the usual suspects where the Intrepid, the Ford Toraus, Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevy Monte Carlo & Lumina. With the Intrepid offering the most room, comfort & performance of the lot. All base models btw – so the Dodge offering had the most passenger room, Trunk space, Performance & handling. Besides I think it was the nicest looking of them too.

hmmmm...this discussion almost sounds like "MG vs Triumph"...guess every car is different to everybody....me, I liked the Chevrolet Cosworth Vega!
