I was sitting in my well-worn, big puffy chair, watching reruns of M.A.S.H when my phone rang.
I see a familiar name in the caller ID. It's my long time friend, Allan. Allan and I were in Basic Training together, we went through NORAD SAGE computer maintenance tech school together in Biloxi, MS, and even ended up as room mates at our first post-tech school duty assignment at the 24th NORAD Region in Great Falls, MT.
I had talked to Allan on the phone off and on over the years, but it had been over 45 years since we actually had seen each other. In April 2022 (seems like yesterday), he and his wife, Luz, decided to make a 30 day road trip to see America. It was during this trip that they came by and we had a nice visit for a couple of days, went out for Mexican, etc. It was a great visit and Luz and my wife, Mary really hit it off.
During that trip, Allan had mentioned that his wife had been complaining of stomach pain. Allan said when they got home, she had been reluctant to go to the doctor at first, but he was persistent and she finally went. After a couple visits and a lot of tests, she was diagnosed with aggressive stomach cancer. This was around September 2022. Fast forward to about a week ago, I had called Allan to see how things were going. Not good. He said that Luz's cancer had spread to the liver and other parts and they were expecting she might have a week, or maybe a month.
Don't ask me how, but when I saw the name in the caller ID, I knew. I'm glad that we were able to meet Luz. She seemed like the perfect match for Allan. I'm really heart sick for my friend.
