One of those moments when all you can do is.....

So my son is in the dinning room filling out an application for a job here in town. He's asking me questions about this & that. Now because he hates it when I hover or led unsolicited advice – I was doing my best trying not look over his shoulder and just answering questions as they came up. Figuring he’s a big boy & he’ll figure it out.

Well apparently he’d got a lot of figuring left to do because he walks in the office and says “hey dad?” holding the application in hand “do you think I should’ve filled this out in pin?” /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

Sure enough – he’d filled the entire thing out in pencil.

Leaning back in my chair - I said “Well – it could be worst – you could’ve used a crayon.”

Of course, the crayon would have been more colorful and exposed his artistic side. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I didn't think any company used paper applications anymore!
Keep in mind we're only talkin' bout a 17 year old who's goal is to work the afternoon shift at the local "Starbucks" and I somehow doubt they'd expect a kid to submit a formal resume. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Re: One of those moments when all you can do is...

Geeze: Right after I retired I decided to apply for a welding position with a local fabrication shop here in town. I sent them an online resume, they immediately called me on the phone and scheduled an interview. I was hired on the spot. BUT ..... before I could begin work, I had to prove legal residency via birth cirtificate and Social Security card Drivers license ETC. And then there was the drug test, NO PROBELM once at the drug screning establishment I figured it would be the old urine in the bottle routine {How wrong can one person be} they wanted BLOOD AND HAIR!!! Anyway I DID pass thier screen and went to work.
My point is I felt like I might as well have filled out a paper application in BLOOD /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Re: One of those moments when all you can do is...

In my line of work I can honestly say I’ve never had the “hair test” but I did have to go through the blood test a couple of times. But I’ve topped off many a specimen bottle in my career. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Boy, I must be old.
I never filled out an application until after I was hired, never took a drug test, and never wrote a resume. Nice thing about having been hired for my career back in 1973 and then never changing employers. Stayed there 32 years and then retired.

Just depends on what industry you are working in. I used to work at a FAA certified place, lot of aviation stuff, Military etc. Random drug tests are required. Used to be "randomly" picked every few months. I believe test results were also reported to the FAA. I guess I really wouldn't feel to happy about a drug addict making parts for the plane I was flying on.

Heh, I get a drug test "randomly" every month, but I don't work in a sensitive industry...

I work in a warehouse...

When I held my F.A.A. welding certification the so called random drug test was as you say except not every few months it was EVERY MONTH! There were even times I was "randomly" chosen twice in one week too! NO blood or hair tho Just the urine in a bottle routine.
I couldn`t believe the Blood and Hair test just to fabricate rock crusher equipment. {I think the blood test thing was more to do with insurance bennefit requirements}
The Hair test shows if you have ingested any type of illicit substances even in the distant past. Of course holding an F.A.A. certification for 10 years pretty much ensured I would pass.

"Sign of the Times".

Distrust is the harbinger of chaos, IMO. The classic definition of professionalism is: "Performance on Demand". Regardless the condition, regardless the circumstance. Period. All else is "excess to requirement".

You screw up, you go for a chop. Drugs, alcohol, cold medicine, prescribed medications or a hangnail, "family problems" or dyslexia... all the same.

"Failure is NOT an option."

....unfortunately this is highly under-rated as an attitude.
