Cruzin' songs from my "ute" (With a guitar intro that has a little Zeppelin, a little Beatles and a little Kings thrown in for good measure).

Deep Purple... Deepest Purple... a CD I still own and have in my car (When ever my teen agers do not steal my cds for their cars since they are on a bing "RETRO" music kick). Highway star... Truckin... My Woman from Toyko... There are a few songs it is missing including Perfect Strangers but a great driving CD

I have DP Made in Japan on Vinyl. Besides SOTW, it has Highway Star, Space Truckin' and The Mule to name a few.

I even recognised a little Hendrix and Clapton, too. Nice intro.

Yeah, there were several licks from other well-known artists of the period. Not an intro that was in the original version, but it works!

Local story is these guys were staying at Lake Quinalt Lodge over on the Olympic Peninsula, and there was a big fire across the lake.
They walked out on the dock, saw smoke on the water, fire in the sky, went back in and wrote the song.

I've stood on that dock, but never did see any smoke.
Or fire.

Actually, as they tell the (true) story at the beginning of the song on the Made in Japan (live) album, the inspiration for the song occurred when they were staying at a hotel on Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland. Hence, the lyrics, "we all came out to Montreux, on the Lake Geneva shoreline." They were there to record in a mobile recording studio that was owned by the Rolling Stones. Frank Zappa and the Mothers on Invention were playing a gig at a Casino across the lake from DP's hotel and someone set off a flair gun during the show and actually burned down the casino (Some stupid with a flair gun, burned the place to the ground).

It actually really happened 4 December 1971, Montreaux Switzerland. As an aside, we were in Montreaux and it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Sitting with my beloved on the patio of the Grand Hotel (which was not empty cold or bare) watching the sun set over the alps drinking Montreaux white wine is a memory I will never forget. Oh, and there is a cool statue of Freddy Mercury at water's edge. He lived at Montreaux and his ashes are spread there

I still have my vinyl copy of Made in Japan. Thanks for reminding me. It's been a while, but I will have to dust that off again.

I bought a turntable that converts vinyl to MP3 and now have that record on my iPhone!
