TR2/3/3A One more steering question TR3

I thought I had figured out the steering mounting and I find this. My notes tell me it's mounted 2 1/8" above the steering box. I even have pictures to conform that's where I found it. The problem is that it was not connected to anything in the pictures. I don't see anything in the area to connect it to other than the crossmember tube, and I don't think that's right. Does it mount to a bumper bracket or something else?

check and see if it isn't the engine compartment support for a two piece column. I think it goes on to the firewall above the throttle cross rod.

On a split column, I believe it is the clamp that holds the top of the lower column to the spring tower.

Nope, Just checked and it's not that...

Looks more like one of the exhaust pipe clamps?? Reeaal perty too!

I think it might be an early style clamp for the exhaust, just below the tail of the gearbox. At least the parts books shows an earlier style, before they went to the worse version, and then finally got it right with the TR4..

Randy it's to small to fit the exhaust, but I do know what you are talking about. I have the one piece shaft and the clamp fits perfect around it. Who knows it may not even belong on the car. There is nothing in the engine compartment it could mount to.
