I had an overdrive problem - it wouldn't engage. I determined the problem must be the solenoid but current went to it, at least according to a continuity tester. I made a wrench to take out the solenoid and a friend rebuilt it. More hours of sweat, bad words and disappointment I reassembled the outfit. I put wires together ins steps. I ran the car down the road without the transmission cover and all worked. Put the cover on and no overdrive. Turned out, as far as I could tell, the transmission cover knocked off the wire to lock out switch on the top of the transmission. Massaged the connector and reinstalled the cover, overdrive responds every time. Follow the wires, secure the connections - do the easy stuff.
I hope that will work with the next project - making the headlights work. Both Spitfires have lighting gremlins. And Triumphest is quickly approaching.

I went round and round for one headlight being dim. Turns out the ground was plugged into the wrong bullet ground connector. Currently going round and round getting the horns to work. Just call me dizzy.

This is called Occam’s Razor. The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
