Yikes! There is also a story here in Oregon where a family, sadly, took a mountain road (on GPS) - the guy was a prominent editor at CNET. Anyway, they got caught in deep snow. He tried to hike out and died... but his wife and kids were found (OK).
 
It is amazing how technology and/or the reliance on it is taking the place of common sense.

Interestingly, we have been watching the Amazing Race Canada - and, what has been killing the younger racers is a lack of map reading skills.

Older than I'd like.
 
My first outing with a GPS tried to loop me back thru to an interstate 5 miles out of the way and 1/2 hr longer. After multiple recalculating and an hour later the thing finally caught up to where I was supposed to be. While on my mail route, people would stop and ask how to cross from the street I was on over to main st. I would tell them and they would always come back and say, but my GPS says I can go thru there. OK, follow your GPS, bye.
 
I've never used GPS for directions and have no intention to do so. The one thing I do like about Google maps is the fact that I can use it like a road atlas on my phone.
 
Road atlases are my thing or as above use the google map. I look to see where we are going or where we are at and move on. Rest stops noted and exits logged. But, wife thinks she should have SatNav/GPS on just in case. She can be very annoying with that stuff when in big metro area in traffic. With her and the GPS talking at the same time, just like loud kids.
