The current generation Mustang with the V6 is one of the great values out there, but probably well above your budget. The old Fox bodied Mustangs (with the V8) are also a great value if you can find a clean, unhacked one. Lots of parts to make them go quick.

After running the Hoopa Hillclimb in the BGT,I've
realized that it takes horsepower & tires to be competitive.
I'm considering any year of Mustang,but noticed that
a lot of the V6's have more horsepower than the older V8s.
I'd like to keep it under $3,000.

The real question is do you want to be competitive or do you want to spend $3000. I fear the two are mutually exclusive. You can certainly have fun and be cheap, but being competitive at any motor sport cost money. All sorts of money.AngliaGT said:

If you just want to have fun, keep running the MGBGT and treat it as a personal timed event. If you want to win (or be in contention) open up that wallet and start spending money (and time) to do it right.

Personally, I prefer the luggage carts found at Holiday Inn Express...they have a built-in roll bar, and by staying at this property, the next day I've already become a bonafide racer!

This was an idea - why spend more money on the Cortina,
when I could put towards one of my "fantasy" cars - cars
that I'd purchase if I didn't think with practicality in mind.
I'm trying to look into an interesting 3rd car,rather than
a 3rd car "appliance".
Mustangs seem to fill the bill,& I thought that the V6 version
might be a better choice than the V8.
Is there somewhere I can view the horsepower/torque ratings for
Mustangs from 1982-2002?

That sounds like a reasonable idea, Doug -- I just get worried whenever friends talk about going racing cheaply. Those too words (racing, cheaply) are mutually exclusive in almost all cases.

I'm a big fan of the Fox-bodied (79-93) Mustangs as a value fun car. Had a girlfriend years ago with a '92 GT that her ex had done all sorts of performance work to. A very quick car. They can be found pretty cheaply, and there's lots of performance parts for the 5.0 V8.

Actually Drew I've been seeing prices climb and they are in high demand. There is a guy here with a really clean '83 GT (looks to be 83). Most of the ones I see are beat to death. I've considered getting one but "the word is out" in major publications that this is now the car to start buying. I wonder if the author had a few to sell..
A decent fox body may be hard to find. You'll probabaly have better luck in the mid/late 90's. No one seems to want those as much yet. Buying one of those would be like buying a Fox body ten years ago.
For potential appreciation I'd go fox body. I've often thought about replacing the Javelin with one.....still might all things considered.
