old healeys preservative???

after a considerable amount of time spent cleaning the undercarriage and suspension of my recently acquired bn6, i believe that the best preservative for less than trailer queens might just be all the oil leaks and grease leaks from over filled suspension grease points, transmission, engine, steering boxes, universal joints and the rear end. all those leaks mixed with the road dust of 50 years of neglect make an excellent preservative....or so it seems on the last two old healeys i have owned. im not sure any of us would like for our current cars to be such but when buying a very used one...might just be an excellent point to look at! of course there could be lots of rust under there as well i suppose. i was very happy with the condition of the underside of my car as it obviously had not had much attention to cleaning the suspension and undercarriage over the decades!
 
I have some areas of my 100-6 that match your description (but that I want to clean up anyway):smile:. What system/products did you find worked the best?
 
chet, i did it the old fashion way...putty knife,sharpened linoleum tool, oven cleaner and wire brush and rags! so it will not be concourse when finished...daily driver when finished! it is a v8 conversion !
 
Too bad that stuff rarely if ever made it out to the sills...uggh!

Yep, like Walt says above, if only the Healey "automatic rust proofing system" would have extended out to the inner and outer sills and maybe the doglegs, rust would be a minor issue !!!
 
Hi All,

Although I believe, for the most part, oil is a Healey metal longevity extender, Healey rust extends from the inside of the frame and outer sills out and little oil seems to penetrate these channels. As a result, sill and frame rust appears one day as spot and continues to erode the edges from the inside and extending the spot until the metal disappears. Now, if you could direct the oil leaks to the inside of the frame or sills, then you would have something really effective and good.
