I didn't take this photo, one of Flickr contacts found this machine in Sarles, ND, a rather curious machine that says Federal on the front (of course Federal being a truck company from years ago), I say homemade...

needs to bolt his gas tank back on

No, it's one of these .

Looks like a Model 604. Probably built between 1951 & 1956. I would think it was military surplus. I also think it was possibly used for clearing snow from aircraft runways, even though it appears some parts are missing. The military used a lot of Federal trucks in some unusual configurations, which is typical of our military establishment. Without a serial number, it's hard to tell just what it's purpose was, but it definately looks ex military.

It's one of the earliest mechanical tree huggers made right after the industrial revolution....

ND. I was thinking it was some kind of mining equipment..... Definatly unusual.

Whatever it is, it seems to have a couple head o' youngun' in th' background...

After all the funny jokes... Oh wait, some of you were actually serious...

Good thought Paul, isn't the military quite active in North Dakota in general?

Its a snow dozer Lots of old milatary trucks around ND that had tons of iron weld to there noses to move snow. You should see the one in Minot ND that was used to clear the airport runnway in the early 70's An Autocar semi truck with tracks on the duals and a frame around the hole affair with a blade about 20 feet wide.. scarry looking thing...

My wife's brother has an old truck parked on his property that has a HUGE bladed fan thing - looks like an enormous cooling fan found in most computers - mounted on the front. They used it to clear the roads and highways where she lived - WAY northwestern Minnesota, one hour from Fargo, not far from Minot.

Sure looks homemade whatever it is. I've seen apparatus similar to that on equipment used to spread asphalt, but a snow removal tool sounds pretty logical

Why not Minot? freezin is the reason!!!!
lived there in high school yers I remember some crazy snow and snert storms.

You guys wanted a real snow blower? Meet The Beast, this 1952 Sicard is one very mean looking truck, now retired from the snow clearing business...

The engine that drives the blower (behind the cab, on the rear deck) is massive, quite the machine this one...

You in Co. like us laugh at one of those. This is the way thaey do it in serious snow country.
