Been procrastinating long enough. Its time to get back to the EType. My rebuild kits just came from the front brakes and I'm going out there as soon as I sumbit this post and start installing the front brake calipers. The rear brakes and hand brakes are done (I did them when I rebuilt the IRS). So, once I get the fronts installed, the next step is to rebuild and install the master cyls and booster, then run some new lines. I've not decided whether to go with SS lines or just stock soft metal lines.

Basil,

The password is working. I installed the Wilwood racing brakes on my 68 about two years ago. Took maybe and hour to do. I now have excellent brakes. If I do another S1, will do it again.

Wilwoods are somthing I might consider someday, but for now I'm just sticking with the stock breaks. I just had them re-lined.

Update: In order to centralize my front calipers I had to order a bunch of shims. I've also ordered new front brake pads and new bleeder valves. Hopefully by next week end the all the brakes will be rebuilt and the next step will be to install new brake lines. I've decided to go with pre-bent brakelines (from XKs Unlimited) rather than try to bend my own.

Basil

Have you ever tried Speed Bleeders? Russell

Greg, I have speed bleeders on three of the cars and love them. They are even available at my local NAPA now.
Basil, what material are the lines from XK's? A friend is doing a total resto of his '61 flat floor, and it won't be long before it's at that stage. Got it painted 2 weeks ago.
Jeff

Greg - No, I've never tried Speed Bleeders, but certainly sounds interesting. I'll keep them in mind.

Jeff,
XKs sell both the original style soft steel or optional (expensive) stainless. I've not decided which way I'll go but probably with the standard steel since, if you flush the system occassionaly there is not reason they won't last.

Basil

Thanks, Basil. Knowing my buddy, he'll opt for the stainless, or try to talk me into bending the new lines!
Incidentally, as I said above, Speed Bleeders are handy litle critters.
How's Mrs. Fawlty feeling? Much better I hope. Wish her a belated happy birthday.
Jeff

Thanks, she's much better now, but still being picky about what she eats.

YOu have me thinking about those Speed Bleeders. The rear brakes on the EType are a pain to bleed even on a good day, so those would make it much less of a hassle. It looks like they are available at any Auto Zone...great there's one just up the street so I could take my original bleeder valve there and compare to make sure I'm getting the correct size.

Basil

Great minds think alike, eh wot?
I always hated bleeding the rears on my E type. Wish they had been available back in the dark ages.
Glad to hear the Mrs. is back on her feet.
Jeff

The bleeders are in the β€œHELP” section. They don’t have an application chart so it’s smart you are taking one of yours. The Healey takes 3/8” 24 TPI. FWIW

My shims came today from XKs, hopefully the Brake Pads will be here tomorrow and by this weekend I can finish off the front brakes.
