OK, question about the valence

I spent quite a while today playing panel beater and bondo man on the valence that goes between the fenders. I was looking on the internet and found this pic from clasic motor sports and I see a rectangular hole in the valence. Mine has no such hole. What is this for? Did someone just cut this out for the oil cooler or sumthing?

Interesting, the only ones I have seen like that are when people cut them out, like you mentioned, for an oil cooler.
 
That is indeed on oil cooler opening. This is what mine looks like with the cooler installed.

Opinions very on the need for a cooler. If you do it to prevent overheating of the engine coolant then you are just masking another problem, if you do it to cool the oil and use a thermostat then you are help the oil and bottom end in my opinion. It isn't needed but it helps.
 
Well, when I had mine on the road before, it ran hot. It had the oil cooler as well but did not have a hole cut out for it. Hmmn, I might punch out a couple of round holes with a greenlee punch that I have for punching out holes in electrical boxes. I have replaced about everything in the cooling sytem now but the head. Funny thing is that it never ran hot at idle or back and forth to work. It would run hot on the interstate on a trip when the fan should have not even been needed. I have also added the six bladed fan and with the higher diff gear and 5 speed maybe it won't do that any more.
 
That sounds like an ignition timing issue to me.
 
I think that's a 1500 valence. They had the cooler mounted there, and those massive bumpers. Maybe one of our 1500 owners will chime in.

It really didn't feel like it. I can usually tell to advaced or retarded timing. There was no spark knocking, and the weber carb is a little rich which should make it a bit cooler as well. I left the heater on all the time to help cool and it was still hot on the highway. It would start out fine and then afet about 30 min the hand would creep up until boiling. When I took off the bottom hose when removing the radiator there was a wire spring in there with all kinds of junk on it and I think this was the issue. I don't know if the radiator is good or bad. Might could be fixed if bad, I have promised to send it out to someone on here(the swap) as soon as I am able to dig through and find it.

1500 valence has two cut outs (at least mine does)
 
The 1500 I just parted out had one large cut out... but the car had been modified quite a bit, so it may have not been original.
 
Hmmm, I am going to wait until I get it all bolted back up to see if it would work out well for my oil cooler. I must admit the temptation is there, if nothing else to have a hole to reach into to retreave something from that area and clean down there, Ya'll know what I mean.
