OK, Now it is the starter!

Yes I am all ready to do the tune-up stuff and get this B really running correctly and the starter has given up the ghost.

The battery is good and indicates a full charge. So I need a 64 MGB starter on a Sunday. I know there has been much said about how a Midget starter can be replaced with certain model
Isuzu starters pretty much as a bolt in replacement.

Does anyone know if the Isuzu starter thing can be done with the MGB?,,, and if so, which one is correct?

Thanks guys, have the day off today and a long week ahead of me so it'd be great if i could manage to get this done today.

Jay

If you've a whole day to wait, why not pull the thing out and at least clean the comm with some red ScotchBrite. It might surprise ya.

And by-th-by... there's a good friend of mine in your area, has an Elan S-3 S/E coupe and an early Europa. Know him? I figger anyone with a Lotus in the area would know the OTHER guy.

EDIT: Coupe's Carnival Red, 'ropa is yellow.

DrEnropy,

I will take it out now and see if the brushes are just totally gone or if the armeture is simply burned. The B motor has flat top pistons in it and while I don't know exactly how high the compression is, the idea of having a japaneese reduction drive starter did appeal to me.

Ufortunately I don't beleive I know your friend, do know a couple of guys including a mad scientist Vic who is building a Duratec/T5 powered, TTR 26R framed S2 that will be a terror, he also has a Ropa or two. Spoke to Ross R. a couple times too when I was considering the project S2 wirewheel.com has had for sale forever.

Although I live in Denver I work in Cheyenne Wyoming,,,,and my position demands alot of extra hours so even though I've lived here going on 7 years I still have'nt made a single Lotus club meeting yet. Should have more time since I gave up the motorcycle roadracing on my Priller.

Ah. Well this friend of mine isn't very "clubby" so he likely isn't a member of an orgainization. You'd more likely find him by happenstance. Just curious. He's a Mechanical Engineer, BTW.

If you DO run across him, poke him over NOT being on this Forum. Ya can tell 'im I told ya to do it.

Will do,

so on my way to the parts store to get filter wrench that fits this gargantuan spin on oil filter since it would certainly seem it has to be out of the way for this starter, that looks like it was manufactured to start a C-130, to come down and out.

grease under my fingernails, ah, makes me feel young again!

So I took the starter with me after I dis-assembled it and cleaned the armeture and brushes with scotchbright. It did seem to clean up well.
On the test machine it spun well but the tech was concerned that the current passing through it was on the low side at "38.4"

I am going to re-install it anyway and give it a shot, if it still won't crank the motor healthily I'll bite the bullet I buy a new one but in a high torque reduction drive unit.

Anybody else working on their cars today?

Jay

I'm waiting to hear how this "went" Jay.

I did a little tuning yesterday, if the weather holds I'll get back out there and do a little more on my 70 BGT.
I pulled the plugs yesterday and #1 & #2 looked just right.
However #3 & #4 were black. So I adjusted the carbs again.
I don't remember if I adjusted them after putting in the distributor I got from Jeff at Advanced Distributors.

I don't think I did. :frown:

The rear carb was too rich. In fact both were but the rear was more so. After leaning and balancing them The RPM increased about 300 without me touching the idle screws. That was good since it was idling at about 700, this brought it up to a nice smooth 1000.
I looked at my cap & rotor but they are still looking brand new. I think I'll put some clean plugs in today so I can check again after a couple hundred miles.

Progress report:

DrEntropy was right. After re-installing the starter she worked like a champ and turns the motor over with authority.

Thanks Dr. you saved me alot of time and expense!

We here at Chaos & Mayhem PTY, LTD. are always pleased to be of service.

Glad it worked out for ya, Jay. It' ain't a "permanent" fix but it'll get ya time to decide what to order as a replacement.

Ah, we loves us a happy ending!!

I was going to fiddle with mine, but then my sis in law called with a "oh no, all the water ran out of my radiator" emergency. Turned out to be one of the hoses leading to the back heater (it's a minivan).
I put two gallons in, it wasn't running out very fast so I followed her to the shop where they get their work done then gave her a lift home in my BGT.
At one point she actually said "maybe I should get one of these"!!
