Oil/water gauge - anyone taked the front off?

OK, I could not leave it alone.
It keeps haunting me. Why doesn't the face on the oil/water gauge light up entirely, like the other gauges?

With great care and patience, I removed the holding bracket behind the gauge. The oil line and capillary tube are still attached. I pulled the gauge forward out of the dash as much as I could. There it hangs, about two inches out. The stiff oil line holds it nicely.

I remove the chrome ring and the glass. I found a strip of yellow/green plastic, about 1/4 inch wide, pressed around the circumference. It's between the gauge face and the glass holding ring.

I remove that and now my gauge lights up much better. But, and there usually is one, the light now shows the empty space. There are four metal spacers, that are part of the gauge face, that keep the dial's distance from the front.

Now for the dumb question. Is my gauge suppose to have that plastic yellow/green piece? Is that the correct color? Has it changed over time? What's up Doc?

My camera broke yesterday, or I'd be posting a couple photos. Does anyone have or want to take some photos, showing the break down of what parts and how the front of the gauge is put together?

Happy Motoring!
Roger

ausmhly, an article in "healey marque" shows a breakdown of the guage. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif yes i know but the guage face should come off the same way. just ease up the clips (bent tabs) behind the chrome face once off the rest should follow.
