Oil varnish, no pressure and GR starters

Well, I have been trying hard to get my 65 B' up and running again (mostly for the mileage), but I have had quite a time trying to get the engine to develop oil pressure. I have read that sometimes people switch the oil pump gaskets, and put an early gasket into a late motor, or vice versa.

I could not remember how I put in the oil pump years ago (car has been sitting since 94), so today I dropped the pan to have a look at what was going on. After cursing out the designer of the front crossmember, I got the pan off, and dropped the pump. I primed it, and gave it a spin, and oil pumped right out.

I started cleaning out the pan, and noticed quite a bit of varnish in the bottom of the pan, but did not think too much of it. When I started cleaning up the strainer, I was amazed that the strainer seemed to be totally sealed in varnish. I soaked it for a while in carb cleaner, and then shot a couple of cans of brake cleaner to clean out the screen.

I forgot to get more oil to put in the engine, so tomorrow I will give that gear reduction starter I got from Hap a workout and see what happens.

I must say, the gear reduction starter is worth every penny. It spins the motor like there is not tomorrow. It took a bit of doing to get it in like I wanted it, but it works at least 90% better than the old pre-engaged unit.

I will let everyone know how things turn out.
