Hi,

Has anyone installed the AH spares alu oil sump (eng664)? on the website is mentioned that some modification to the oil pump pick up is required. Does anyone know what modification that is?

thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Walter

I have one. Fits well.

It's appreciably thicker than the steel version, which means:

- it takes longer mounting bolts
- it takes ~0.5 liters less oil to hit the max on the dipstick
- you're supposed to trim the oil pump pick-up pipe to give more clearance

The shop that first installed my pan didn't trim the pump, and it worked fine. But when I later dropped the pan, I measured the clearance by putting a few layers of cardboard in the bottom and test fitting it, and confirmed that it was pretty tight, so I went ahead and trimmed the pipe (with a small cut-off wheel).

The mesh oil screen is flexible enough that it fits without modification.

The triming is a simple job as mentioned with a cut off wheel. stuff some paper down the tube to catch any metal or take apart the pump to clean it out. I finally bought one after inspecting 3 in the spare parts bin and seeing so much damage to them I was not in the mood to do a lot of welding repair. PS: the longer bolts come with the oil pan.

My pump and sump came from DW, the pipe had to be trimmed and the mesh guard for the intake had to be flattened to allow the sump to be fitted.

I do not remember trimming the dip stick but I do know that it takes less oil, considerably so, more like 4 English pints less.

I have had one of these sumps on my BJ8 for 11 years with no dents or hits. No sump guard. I recommend the alteration to the intake for the oil pump because I think the screen sits right on the bottom of the oil pan if you don't . You could be restricting entry to the oil pump.
