oil pump for rebuilt engine

When rebuilding an MGB engine, should you always replace the oil pump, or will a pump within the tolerances in the shop manual work just as well as a new one?

Are the new oil pumps you get from Moss or Vicky Brit not worth (as my grandfather used to say) the powder to blow 'em to heck?

If I do need a new pump, where can I get one that won't let me down?

I'd get a second/third opinion but if it is within tolerance my thought is that it should be fine. It is probably the most oil bathed part in the whole engine, and from what I've heard more experience folks discuss it rarely has any meaningful wear.

Again, I'd ask Hap or other more experienced members.

If it is within tolerance it is just like a new one as far as function is concerned, go for it.

DITTO what Jack said.

I agree with Tony and Jack. Check out the tolerances, and also inspect for cracks in the bottom plate. I would recommend giving the screen a good cleaning to insure that it flows like it is suppose to. Also check the top of the strainer to make sure it has not developed a crack along where the pump mounts to it.

I pulled one from an engine that had probably 150k miles on it, and it still looked good enough for me to put in the keeper bin. I used some emery paper to clean up the light scratches on the bottom plate, but aside from that it works just fine.

As for where to get one that will last, that might be hard to say with any authority. I got one from my local parts store under the Beck Arnley name, and it seems pretty good to me.

Of course, someone like Hap would be our resident expert on such things.

Original is porbably better if within spec.

Don't forget to dress the end plate to level it - about the only part that can be adjusted if it is worn. Should be dead flat (might as well double port it and bore the pickup while you are there).

If going through the trouble and expense if building an engine, why not just buy a new one. Isn't that the heart of the engine? If that fails, all other parts you purchased are basically garbage. I'm in the process myself and I've thought about reusing it but just don't think the chance should be taken.

I keep every one I take out of engines...have several on shelf...sometimes if one is outside tolerances, I can swap parts from another into it to get it within tolerances.

I agree if in tolerence you should be good to go, and if using new, never assume they are good to go, always, always open up and check the tolerences on a new pump.

Good point about new, Hap. My confidence in new parts for our cars has dropped dramatacally of late. We really don't know where many of these new parts from now.

WA1KWA - if I didn't know better, I'd think that was the logistical designation for an Army unit...hehehe

What does it mean, by the way?

Ah, thanks!

Back-yard foundries in Taiwan, methinks.

It's not just the auto industry!
