Should I be able to get an oil pressure reading on my gauge by just rotating the engine with the starter?

I didnt last night so I plan to disconnect the line and make sure I at least get oil to shoot out. I want to make sure that my pump is, well, pumping.... before I start the engine.

Kind of depends how long you spin it. It has to fill the filter, and lines, and such. If you put the engine together right(lots of lub) running it for 20 sec or so will hurt nothing.

Think about how long it takes to get oil pressure when you just change oil and filter on one of your other cars.
 
I can get oil pressure running the starter, but it usually takes a minute or more of cranking before pressure comes up.
 
Canking a fresh motor for a long time to get oil pressure is not the best way. A new motor wants to get the lifters rotating right away and with considerable oil pressure.

you should fill the oil filter with oil as well as back prime the motor and fill the oil cooler (if fitted) and lines B 4 cranking.

A 10 second or so crank with the plugs out should produce results.
 
It is a good idea to pull the plugs for the intial startup and crank the motor til you get the oil pressure. Do not start the motor til you get the oil pressure. If everything is together correctly, it will come up, then worry about everything else. Good luck......

Well I worked on my oil pressure all day, seems to be a common theme. I fixed my oil pressure line had a plastic line; it blew off and made a mess of my garage. Purchased some silver solder and fixed the original line, it looks as good as new, works great. That was the easy part. The PSI at idle is 10, and at cruise it is around 40, I am not happy. So I tried Haps ball bearing trick, now idle psi is around 5 psi and cruise is around 35 psi. I am going to prey that some how I can get good oil pressure without pulling the engine. It is late so I will try again this weekend.

I put oil in the rear exit oil line orfice, located on the block passenger upper rear section of the block where the steel hard line hooks up factory, I use a small funnel and rotate the engine couter clockwise by hand (crankshaft bolt) this pulls oil back into the pump. This alone will more double lessen the time it takes to get oil pressure by spinning the engine with the starter. Without it could take awhile, I have not did the counter clockwise deal oil funnel deal in a very long time, as I like you were concerned about the time it took in the past, now I'm used to seeing oil pressure in 60 seconds of spinning over time or less, I alway use good CRC moly assembly lube on the bearings and Crane cam lube on the cam and lifters.
