Oil Pan Gasket - 4 inch pieces?

I'm replacing the oil pan gasket in my 58 100-6 with one I received from Moss. In addition to the flat cork piece (in 2 parts) that fits my pan, they sent two 4 inch long by 1/8 inch by 1/8 inch parts. In the book it looks like they fit at the front and back of the oil pan. I'm hesitant to do that because I don't know how the entire pan will seal if I put those in. Any ideas?

Thanks! I went back under the car and saw it embedded in the gap. When I first saw it, it just look like remains of the larger oil pan gasket. I'll carefully pry it out and replace. Thanks a million.
