Hi guys - can you take me to school on if these are often a source of leaks and how to address them? Carbs have to come off I assume, yes?

Thanks!

Cork gaskets are used with intake and exhaust manifolds out of the way.

I usually put a bit of goop on both sides of the cork. Never had a leaker.

Some related engine info if that helps;

No smoke on start up, acceleration or declaration.
1098 with all the PVC stuff in there
New PVC unit and fresh and tightened hoses
No smoke out of oil filler cap when running
Buffeting air on oil filler cap when running, creates slight suction if you cap it with your hand

Skip, sounds like a good engine.

There are two different cover styles. One has a flat lip, parallel with the gasket. The other forms a "U" and wraps slightly around the edge of the gasket. The latter is stiffer and will prevent the potential for the gasket to slip out. You also need a sealing washer around the fastening bolt. That is a metal washer with rubber bonded to one side. They'll leak from the bolt as readily as from the gasket. See if you can acquire the later type covers if you have the early style, and use the rubber gaskets, not the cork ones. Lastly, no not over tighten the center bolt. That will deform the cover and squeeze the gasket too much, increasing the chance it will work it's way out. Use either Form-a-gasket, aviation type, or Hylomar. Silicone does not work well. Then, keep your fingers crossed that it still won't leak after all that... :hammer:

Oh, forgot about the sealing washer. Thanks Gerald. Think you can find them at Ace in one form or another.
