Oil for shocks

Did you guys recommend mineral oil for the shocks? Is this something I can get at CVS or is it a special mineral oil?
 
Nevermind, I forgot I was going to use my Harley Fork oil.
 
I went to the local motorcycle shop (Honda i think) and purchased Bel-Ray high performance fork oil. I used 40 weight in the fronts to tighten them up and 20 weight in the rears to keep them soft. This was 3 years ago and no problems or leaks since then, just great handling.

20-weight is the viscosity recommended by the manufacturer. Fork oil works fine. I use the Armstrong Shock Oil that Moss sells, just because it's handy to throw onto an existing parts order.
 
Plain old clear mineral oil that you pick up at the local drugstore!
 
The problem with hydraulic jack oil is that it doesn't have anti-foaming agents in it. On a rough road the oil could foam and shock performance can suffer.
 
Use hydraulic oil, not jack oil. Available at farm type stores. Used in the rams and pumps, etc. Has anti-foaming agents, seal swelling agents (even though that is meaningless in a shock)and comes in various viscocities. We use 20w in our shocks.... and have done for 15 years. Peter
