TR4/4A Oil filter of choice for the TR3/TR4 spin-on adaptor

After converting the TR6 to a spin-on filter I'm totally sold on the spin on filters. I've order the spin-on adaptor kit for the new TR3, but am blanking on the oil filter choices from the local auto parts stores.

Searching the prior year turned up the following other fits;

Wix 51034
AC - PF34
Carquest - 85034
Fram - PH2825
FRAM - PH3600
Motorcraft - FL13B
NAPA - 1034
Purolator - L20064

Can anyone comment on which if these tends to promote the best oil pressure?

I use to use FRAM - PH3600 whenever I changed the oil on my tr3a. pressure seemed to be fine around 70. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

Mee too. I have used the FRAM - PH3600 on both my TR3 and TR4 with good results.

I don't have time to research it for you right now, but there is a site that compares quality of design and construction of the filters.

Wix and Hastings are the leaders(Napa Gold by extension as it is made by Wix).

Fram if you can't get anything else,

Purolator I've had engine problems with their filters, I will NEVER install another purolator filter on any car that I work on.

JMHO

I use Fram PH2870A or equivalent. This is the filter used in many 4-cyl VWs & Beemers. I paint it an approximation of the green used on the old canisters so it doesn't look too out of place in there:

I've seen that study... I don't put a lot of stock in it.

This is, in my estimation, a very good report. Not the one I saw, because the one I was referring to also included Hastings oil filters.

I am familiar with this report and for lack of a better, unbiased investigation, I consider it well worth reading, researching and giving credence to.

Which one do you use on your TR6?

I buy the Fram PH3600 locally when they are on sale as a Two-fer-One deal. I just change the oil every 1,000 - 1.500 miles, so the filter doesn't really matter to me that much.

Take the adapter and bolt to your local Napa/Checker and choose away. Anything that fits will work and be an improvement just watch the length. I like a Napa wix product for my 3.

Geo...the painted filter idea is brilliant!

PS. does anyone know where to get replacement o-rings that go between the spin on adaptor and engine block?

Re: Oil filter of choice for the TR3/TR4 spin-on a

Moss I think might have them for my Seattle store, which uses Moss, got me a couple for my gauges.

When I transferred my adapter from the red one, rusted out, to the black one, got the o-ring from a bearing supply store. Hardware store had the same diameter in their plumbing supply section, but it wasn't as thick as the original.

I also use the Napa Gold(Wix) on mine. With synthetic change it once a year(now only about 5K miles, annually).

I would be careful buying o-rings from the hardware section.
Quite often they are made of plain rubber which won't hold up as well to the heat and engine oil.
Buna-N o-rings are manufactured from nitrile rubber which has the chemical resistance and temperature range required for engines.
Viton 0-rings are recognized by their rust color. They don't handle the psi(1,500-2,500) that the Buna-N(2,500-4,000) do, but carry a higher temperature rating.
Either type is suitable for our needs.

Right. Most common is EPDM, which works great for plumbing (good weather and abrasion resistance) but not with petroleum products.

Here is another study. They are not complimentary of Fram oil filters. I use Purolater on my daily drivers. Purolator is the stock filter for Subaru which says it all to me. I can't remember what I used for the spin on for the TR. My oil is significantly cleaner when I check the dipstick. For the first week with the spin on in was so clean I thought it wasn't circulating.

Hi Folks;

"Wix" is the primary mfg. to a lot of the other suppliers:

"Wix" private labels for many of them:

If you change your oil once or twice a season; I don`t believe it makes much of a differance:
