I know this has been covered but I couldn't find it in the old posts. I got a N&K 2009 filter but it would not fit, too long. All they had to fit was a 2004 which is quite a bit shorter. What is the difference? I change the filter frequently if the it is simply the amount of filtering surface area I should be okay??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
 
Well TH, seem like ifin it be too long you don't have much choice but to go wid the otter one. Yes generally speaking the difference between short and long filters is simply the amount of filtering surface area available. I just installed a K&N HP-2009 oil filter on my BN7 and didn't have any problems. Where was it too long???

Keoke,I know, thats why I used the short one. I could not find the medium size ones at this time. We are some what limited up here. Kragan and Napa only carry stuff for broken down Broncos and Jeeps. I gotta get out more.

A question on a related topic: I do not have a spin on filter, but have elected instead for an occasional oil bath for my arm. I have used the felt filters, but have seen a metal encased paper filter. Aside from the obvious wise- cracks about not updating to a spin-on, does anyone have any advice on the metal encased cartridges vs. the felt ones?
 
Modern paper filters will give much better filtering than the antique felt filters. If you really want to keep the original filter housing, Crossland makes a paper replacement for the felt element. It's in the Moss catalog. From my investigation, the paper replacement is little better than the felt.

In my opinion, if you are really going to drive the car, this is one application where you could gain in filter quality & effeciency with a modern spin on filter. A low mileage show car would likely not know the difference.

Yes Dar100, if you retain the original filter as I do then there is a Metal encased Paper Element filter manufactured by "WIX" Part # 51302 that is excellent. Similarly, the best felt type units I have found are "GUD" Part # G.206 from the UK.---Fwiw---Keoke

P.S. "ED Kahler" and I have a patent on changing oil with the original filters, we barely get our hands dirty.
 
Dave, well, the car is definitely not a show car, but I really only intend to drive the car a little over 1,000 a year. I prefer the look of the original housing. Ultimately, I'd like a 100 LeMans as a driver, but my little dream keeps getting pushed off for kid's expenses, imagine that!

Keoke, thanks for the info on filters, I'll try one of each. Up to this point, from my experience on this board, I've pretty much learned that you're usually pretty reliable, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif but you've lost some credibility with me now, unless that was a joke about you and Shorn. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif
 
I think what Keoke meant was that you can remove the whole filter housing assembly from the engine without spilling it, & take it to the bench for much easier & cleaner disassembly. Eh?
