Oil Filter Adaptor

Greetings again!

I had been putting off changing my oil cuz of the messy cartridge system that the TR7 uses. However, to my delight, the PO had put on the oil filter adapter kit thingy so that it will take a normal oil filter.

However...

I don't know what filter that would be! The filter that I took off is a NAPA oil filter, but all identifying markings have been rubbed/scraped off (I assume by the filter wrench or something), so I cannot find a part number to cross reference.

The folks at AutoZone were kind enough to let me open their oil filter boxes one-by-one and see if any of them looked like they matched up. The problem was that the hole in the center (that it screws in to) would vary in size slightly, so I didn't feel comfortable that I would get the right one.

Now, the question is: does anyone know what oil filter I should get for this adaptor:

I'm not sure if it is the same adaptor as on my car, but the filter mine uses is a Pennzoil PZ12. Alternately, you can take that dirty, filthy, oily old filter to the store with you and see which one matches up

It depends on where the PO got the spin on adapter. Cartridges for the Stag and TR7 are the same, I also have a spin on adapter for my Stag. The unipart spin on is GFE173 which equals a Fram PH2964. Try that out for size.
 
Thanks, I'll to try those two out. I took my old one in to AutoZone and held it up to 20 or 30 of 'em, but couldn't find one that I felt matched. These two part numbers will at least give me something to go on!

The stock filter is not hard to change at all and the stock filters are relatively cheap. I have 2 of the stock can and bolt arrangements and I keep one cleaned and ready to go with a new filter in it so I can change oil and filter as fast as if it were a spin on. Having said that I confess to having finally gotten around to changing out the 20-50 for 10-40 just today. Now I can get a new filter ready to go and maybe I'll get the 20-50 back in by Thanksgiving.

I gotta go with Dale on this one.You really need to get underneath and see the design. It may be cumbersome but the history behind the system is part of the fun.
Still way too many white glaciers, I can hardly wait for the first warm day.

Yeah. Wussies. The TR7 filter is a breeze. You want rough? 1974 Jag XJ6. The filter setup is similar, but it's mounted horizontally. You lose about 1/2 the oil from it before you get get it upright and out of the engine bay. And it's bigger.
 
I agree with the "wussie" label. The original oil filter sounds like the same one for the TR6. I just never figured out why everyone made such a big deal about changing the old can and bolt system. I can change it faster on my TR6 than I can on my Jeep, which has a spin on filter. If access is an issue, on my TR6, I remove the front driver side tire to get in there and remove the oil filter. Even the big rubber sealing gasket isn't that big of a deal.

Oh yeah, forgot to update this thread. I ended up finding a matching filter by cross-referencing the Fram PH2964 number with STP (AutoZone didn't have the Fram one in-stock).

Speaking of driving, I put 200 miles DRIVING my Stag this past weekend up at altitude in stunningly gorgeous sun filled blue skies through the snow capped Rocky Mountains with my lovely wife.

I stick by the "wussie" label. Read my reply again. I stated I can change the old can and bolt TR6 filter quicker than a spin on. I'll be driving it soon as the snow, gravel and road debris are gone. Also..I enjoy changing the oil and filter. I know it's being done right, and its a labour of love.

I used fram 966b, or the kn equuivalent.
 
I forgot that you TR6 and TR7 owners only have 3/4 or 1/2 an engine in the engine compartment anyway, gives you more room for the oil to drain down your arm

Speaking of oil changes, I guess it is time to go do mine and put GM synchromesh in the 5 speed, and then go for another drive here in snowy Colorado

My 58 Jag XK150S needed to be jacked up on the right, remove the wheel, disassemble the inner fender plates, then remove the filter can. There was only about 2 mm clearance to remove the bolt, which made it entertaining (!) to reinstall it - holding it in against spring pressure, trying to thread the bolt using the sides of 2 adjacent fingers (no room for thumb). Ugly.

Of course I sold that car when I was a poor student.
