Hi All, seems to be more drips of oil on the ol' cardboard on the garage floor, seems to be on the increse. Is this related to thrust washers, or front seal ? either or how dificult to repair myself, any thoughts? 79 Spit with 39k.

any suggestions are welcome.
thanks

I have come to believe you will always have some drops of oil under the car. I have made peace with this theory. It does not stop me from trying to fix them though. It would help to give us some more info. Try to determine the area from which the drops are coming.
I don't believe the thrust washers alone will cause an oil leak. The front seal or rear seal will, as will the rocker cover and several other places. The last one I located was the oil pressure sender. It was actually leaking around the wire connections. A replacement fixed that one. If the rocker cover is the culprit a silicone gasket is a good replacement. Good Luck, Ernie

It's a LBC. What did you expect? Oil is cheap. :jester:

Even after a complete rebuild, I get drips at times. They are there to tease and torment me. I check the oil and it is full, but I have drips.

Today I saw a new drip from the new TRF petcock on my new Wizard radiator. I say new, as in three years old, but less than 2,000 miles.

Such is the life of an LBC owner. Tomorrow I'll try to cheat and quickly drain the sealed off radiator from the petcock and when it stops flowing, I'll thread a new one in it's place. Hopefully without making a major mess on my new floor.

Did you switch over to a synthetic oil? They tend to leak a bit more.

No, still using the diesel oil. This is really nothing but a small annoyance.

Remember, Triumphs are like puppies they both like to leave puddles.

if your spit is like a TR6 engine, and you have that annoying aluminum block in the front that the oil pan bolts go in to and get stripped out that could be the issue, or the gasket between the front plate and the block, or the timing cover and front seal, see it could be a lot of gaskets gone bad.

sounds like an engine overhaul

Interesting thought Keith. I did do an oil change recently, used Brad Penn 10/30 and not 20/50 like I usually use. Wonder if the lighter / thinner oil is part of the issue. HMMMM.....

Rhody, how much of an oil leak are we talking about with your car? Will theleak it fill shot glass, say, in a week? It it worse than that?

I've never ownned an LBC that didn't leak oil. I bought basically new ones that leaked some oil. Strangely, I have a restored MG Midget that leaks less than any LBC I've owned. She leaks about 3-4 drops in maybe two weeks, from the engine somewhere I guess.

I consider that extraorginary! In fact, I'm quite happy with it. I just put some cardboard under the car in my garage, and forgetaboutit.

How much are you leaking? If it's a lot, it should be easy enough to track down . . . :yesnod:

Mark, the leaks are very small. I doubt any of them would ever fill a shot glass. As I said the most significant one was from the oil pressure sender and I simply replaced that. The motor was complecely rebuilt with every seal and gasket replaced. I do get a very small drip from the front seal but nothing I am going to stress about. I don't even put cardboard down. When I sweep the garage floor I simply sweep the dirt onto the drips and then sweep it up.

It is like the 6. I didn't put those cork ones in and just shot it all up w/ ultra black. Mine doesn't leak. I thik the trick is to ditch the cork and fill the screw heads in that block w/ sealer.
