Oil Cooler Leak

I retrofitted the 250 a few years ago and added the spin-on oil filter set-up and oil cooler. Now I have a slow leak (drip) coming from the oil cooler. :frown: I checked the hose connections at the top, and they are dry and tight. So, I am assuming that the core has sprung a leak. Can these units be serviced at a radiator shop? Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had a similar issue. Problem was the not the cooler but one of the hoses. The flare seat had an imperfection pressed into it. Could never get it to seal.

If the issue is the cooler itself, I agree with Andy, it's prob easier/cheaper to source a new Mocal cooler. They can be had cheaper than the common LBC sources if you shop around.

You may want to consider a B&M cooler. hey are available at speed shops and on line. You can buy a polished aluminum cooler for around $60. hey are sold as transmission coolers. I called B&Ms ech line and asked if they can be used for oil coolers. They assured me they can be used as an engine oil cooler.
My brother has been running one on his 250 for over 3 years.
The polished cooler is very close to the size of the Mocal unit.
Sorry, although I work at a computer for 8 hours a day. I still cannot paste a simple picture into one of these posts.

You can see the cooler at this link.

Scott: Thanks for the suggestion. If I replace the cooler, would the lines also need to be replaced or are they generally standard sizes?

BobH- If your just copying an image on the net very easy.

Another vote for BAT. Had a great experience shopping with them. The Mocal coolers are way stronger than the knockoffs you get elsewhere. Look at the connections to compare apples: apples.

Thanks Don.

Yes he has the spin on filter adapter. the threads on the B&M cooler are different than those on the Mocal unit. He used his old hoses, but I can't remember if he used an adapter or cut the ends and changed the ends.

Alan,

the Mocals are stronger than many of the cheaper coolers. But the B&M units are very strong. the threads are 1/2 inch NP, the units are tested to 200 PSI. I hink Mocal tests at 170, but I would have to check the catalog to be sure.
I run their 28,000# cooler on my Jimmy as a tranny cooler. It's been there for 5 years and never leaks a drop. I's mounted on steel straps, not those silly plastic tie strap type things.
B&M doesn't manufacture their own coolers. I can't remember the name of the manufacturer, but you'll see their stacked plate design under other names.
