The ship did not release any pollutants into the water as it burned, according to the shipping company.

To which I say:

With all the fluids in each car I don't see how it could be anything else but BS.

Have yet to see it verified if the unofficial reports are true that it started from one or more batteries spontaneous combustion occurring.

I've seen reports that there were EVs on board that "might" have made it more difficult to put out the fire, but haven't seen any definitive reports on that or on what, if any, role the EVs may have had in the fire starting in the first place.

The key phrase here is "as it burned," not "as it sank."

An interesting note from another article, News.com.au , "[the ship] caught fire on February 17 after it ran aground about 407km [253 mi] from the Azores. As we say in the Navy "Running aground will ruin your entire day."

Used to be combustion engines had fuel, oils removed to ship. Then off loaded onto trucks and the dealers did services before selling. If the battery cars were primary fuel then the carbon fiber, fiberglass and aluminum cars stood no chance with the heat from burning tires. So, the attempt to put out the fire with whatever they used was caught before it ran off the boat? Unlikely.
