Was watching an old early 60s episode of Jackie Gleason last night. One thing I noticed, every scene he was in, including opening and closing, he was lighting up a cigarette. Was generally acceptable back then as the health effects movement was just starting to roll. But still seeing someone doing a variety show singing/dancing with smoke curling from one hand, was a bit unusual.

Another thing you don't see much (thank heaven): a guy acting drunk - and getting laughs.

I attended my grandson’s performance of grease at his summer drama camp. In the play Rizzo is trying to get Sandy to smoke a cigarette . When Sandy resists, she says β€œ come on, it’s not going to kill you”. That got a good laugh out of the audience.

I seem to recall Johnny Carson smoking too.

I have to admit, I loved Foster Brooks' schtick of playing the drunk guy. Mainly because he did it so well and some of the stupor-induced faux pas were hilarious! He was a regular on the Dean Martin celebrity roasts.
