off in the bushes

ok I'm putting in a new anti sway bar on a 67 340 (mk2)
and everything is in place but I can't get the nuts on the ends on.

so at each end of the any sway bar there is a drop link (might not be the right term) and it has two polyuratian bushes on over one under. I need to compress the bushes to thread on the retaining nut but no luck.
any tips?

currently I've jacked up the A arm but the lower bush is still not compressed enough to thread the nut
