Oddball Defroster Blower

Wasn't sure where to post this, but let's try here.

This large sausage shaped blower motor intended to be mounted separately from a heater unit came on my 1963 TVR but I doubt it would have been specially developed for it - more likely cribbed from a BMC model of some sort.

Anyone recognize it?

Nope... looks like somethin' Zebco woulda sold to Smith's after th' war, tho. :jester:

This looks like a blower motor which used on boats to clear fuel fumes from the engine compartment before starting the motor. Since it had a round intake and vent, it is easy to modify to many uses especially boats which tend to be custom built.

Interesting thing is it says it's a "heater" but there isn't a heat exchanger in it?

I don't think it's a defroster at all, I think it's an afterburner. It's likely just labeled defroster to get past the insurance companies. maybe "defrost" the grille of the car behind you

Could it be an "under-dash" blower from an A20 or such?

It was installed in the engine compartment and forced air through the heater core and into the cabin.

It now resides under the dash of the Jamaican, without heater, to satisfy the requirement that you have some sort of defroster system (not necessarily a heated one).

The stock MGA heater had been cut down rather rudely to fit beneath the lower hoodline and I couldn't see leaving that bit of bodgery under there.

Note the oil cap and rocker cover which had also been bashed with a hammer until the bonnet would close.... :nonod:

Oh dear!

That looks nothing like the Jamaica I've seen you post pix of. Is this when it was a "new" acquisition?

And I'd agree it wouldn't have been exclusive to the TVR... They didn't have the resources to contract for a 'one-off' blower if they could adapt some other solution. I was thinking it could "suck" from the core as well as it could blow from outside... hence the "under-dash" WAG at something like an A20. Pulling from the core enclosure.

Uh yes, that is the before picture. Quite a change, wasn't it? Think that fan would have moved much air being that far behind the rad? Mind you, the car was running when I got it, it just looked nothing like what I wanted it to finish up as - the gold colour was OK, but not for me. Stupid gold shag carpet, dash with 100 unlabelled switches, silly gas filler, plastic side lights, fake twin exhaust using a dummy just hanging on one side and a real pipe on the other (?!)....I could go on.

I agree that the blower motor has to have been made for other applications - easy to add an optional system. Reminds me a little of the separate blower used on the early Spridgets.
