Wedge Odd TR8 coil behaivior

I just finished testing them two known to be good coils the TR8. One was a Crane Fireball 730-0020. The Crane coil broke up over 3,000 RM just like the gold Lucas sport coil did. Felt like an aggressive RPM limiter cutting in.

The other coil I tested is a TR8 specific Lucas coil I believe a 22-C-12. This definitely made the car run slightly, not right, but better. She pulled past 3,000 RPM more cleanly and with a bit more zest.

The ballast resistor has been cut, so they were both tested without the ballast resistor.

It does seem odd that the Lucas Sport Coil and Crane coils would break up severely but the Lucas 22-C-12 does not.

Anyone have any ideas why the Lucas Sport Coil & Crane would break up but not the other Lucas 22-C-12 coil?

Hi Tom, I've been following this on the wedge list as well. Not really sure it is the coil that is the problem either. I would wonder more about the distributor. Last fall my original coil was starting to pack it in and I replaced it with an off the shelf coil from Napa. Works fine and pulls past 5,000rpm without problems.

I Don't remember, did you check your valve clerances? Could be a problem there as well that could also account for the compression issues. Could also point to a flat cam.

The stock TR8 Lucas coil needs to be run with the ballast resistor. The only reason I can think of that someone might disconnect the resistor is to run an internally ballasted coil. Suggest connecting the TR8 Lucas coil to the ballast resistor.

Does anyone know if the Lucas 22-C-12 is internally ballasted?

I had some spliced wires start to smoke today. The more I look at the wiring the more screwed it is....

That's not a good sign. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif Hopefully its isolated to your ignition wiring and not a total nightmare across the board for the rest of the car as well.

The current wiring set up is;

white / black stripe from ballast resister to neg. post coil
white / black stripe from ballast resister cut/loose

white / green stripe from ballast resister to pos. post coil

wire from negative post coil to distributor body.

Aren't those nice! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
