I just finished testing them two known to be good coils the TR8. One was a Crane Fireball 730-0020. The Crane coil broke up over 3,000 RM just like the gold Lucas sport coil did. Felt like an aggressive RPM limiter cutting in.
The other coil I tested is a TR8 specific Lucas coil I believe a 22-C-12. This definitely made the car run slightly, not right, but better. She pulled past 3,000 RPM more cleanly and with a bit more zest.
The ballast resistor has been cut, so they were both tested without the ballast resistor.
It does seem odd that the Lucas Sport Coil and Crane coils would break up severely but the Lucas 22-C-12 does not.
Anyone have any ideas why the Lucas Sport Coil & Crane would break up but not the other Lucas 22-C-12 coil?
