odd starting problem

I was trying to start the Midget today. It didn't want to start at first, so I go it going with starting fluid. After that it ran fine, I shut it down later and it started right up the next time. The following time I tried, it only wanted to run with the key in the start position. As soon as I let go of the key it would shut off. The next time I tried I got nothing, it just cranked with no attempt to start. Has anyone here experienced anything like this? I'm thinking either a problem with the ignition switch or maybe a very weak spark. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This would be easier with the BE because there isn't a starter relay, but if you run a hot to the coil and fuel pump, then short the starter relay to make it pull the starter in, and get it to start and run, then you will know it is in the switch. Also, you will have completed hotwiring 101. It does sound like the switch to me.
