OD removal and replacement

The overdrive on my BJ8 phII has expired. Can it be removed and replaced without removing the engine and gearbox or does it all have to come out?

Any advice welcome.

Thanks

Ian

You will have to remove the transmission/overdrive unit in order to effect some repairs. This can be done with relative ease without removing the engine. There are some operations which can be done in place that can restore the usefulness of the overdrive. It all depends on what is wrong with the unit. If you do not know what is the matter, you should post the symptoms here so that we can assist you in ascertaining the problem. Sometimes the problem lies in an area that can be reached and fixed without necessitating the removal of the unit. [The solenoid switching apparatus, for example.]

I and others have posted a lot on this forum about trans removal and OD repair. Use the advanced search features to find them and as Elrey said, let us know your symptoms. A lot of problems can be solved by removing the tunnel cover/console and running a series of diagnostic tests.

The symptoms are that last year it worked intermittently, when the transmission was cold, ok, once warmed up it dropped out. I first tried a heavier oil but no joy. I changed out the solenoid because it looked burnt and was weak, and adjusted it as per the manual. I've checked all the electrics. The solenoid works fine, good pull in and all wiring is correct including the throttle switch. I've also changed the springs and balls in the side of the OD unit and in the valve on top but no joy. I'm thinking maybe the pump is worn so there's insufficient pressure or otherwise there's a mechanical problem inside. It doesn't engage at all now and it's tiring to drive without the OD on long runs which is what I use it for. I haven't any way of checking the hydraulic pressure and am now thinking it's just easier to get it rebuilt at Overdrive Services in the UK, I'm in France.
I was hoping I could just remove the tunnel, lift the tail of the transmission a little and remove the OD without removing the box but it seems maybe not. I have read many of the posts on the subject of checking the OD which seem to suggest the OD has to be dropped onto the back of the box vertically which means taking out the box. Have I read that correctly?

Keoke, He is in France and Bill Boulton is not working on much these days. I think he has back problems. He told me last June at the Rendezvous that Kent Lambert how has his inventory. He is a great one for walking someone through problems, though.

Keoke, He is in France-Is that what is wrong with it--
