OD Problem/Question

I had to take the Mrs. to drop off our Van this morning and I was showing her the OD. I flicked the switch and it engaged. I flicked it again and it dissengaged. I engaged it again but forgot to disengage as I was coming towards a light while downshifting into second.

I dropped her off at home and proceeded on to work. During the trip I flicked the switch to engage the OD but no go. Tried Third or fourth several times & nothing. I've never had it so I do not know what it might be.

The OD should have disengaged itself when you shifted to second but would have engaged when you shifted back into third the next time. There are separate switches for the manual engagement (on the column) and the Third/fourth lockout (on the tranny) that overides the manual switch. The switch on the tranny is a contrary thing and sometime get fouled, especially when it shuts off while the manual switch is left on, as you did. I have found that it happens sometimes and will eventually resume operation after sitting for a while and then being driven with the OD off and shifting normally between 2nd and 3rd gears...usually the next time I drive it and engange the OD in 3rd or 4th, it works as usual. I never ask why, but then she is 34 years old.

Driving it to my Club meeting last time it did the same thing but only after running it for a few minutes. Consensus is that it might be low on fluid. I'm going to check it today but I did add oil when I put it in the car - maybe not enough.

Another thing while you're checking - on the side behind the sump is the pump body assembly....check the little ball in mmed up & not allowing things to work.

Some text was missing but I'm guessing this was it. Is this on the passenger or drivers side and if I jack the car up I should be able to see it not problem? How do you un-gum it.

Yep, sorry....I take the body apart & use carb cleaner...Doc or others might know the best way.

What type of OD module is this? If it's a D-Type, there is a separate oil reservoir for the OD.

If the ball and plunger Tony mentioned is "gummed up" then you may have bigger problems. While you're getting dirty you may as well clean the OD filter.

It's very possible the OD switch has failed. Check for power to the OD unit.
