I know that as part of my OD rebuild that I will need to check the oil pressure in the overdrive. I see, on eBay, item # 110281081160 an "Over-Drive" pressure gauge. $50 buy it now, plus shipping. Is this a good deal? Should I jump all over it?

Your thoughts appreciated.

I know I could do way better than that, cobbling parts together from a surplus metals joint, nearby, that has bins full of gauges and fittings.

But, if you don't have a place like that nearby, it's not a bad price...

I didn't hop on the site, but my guess is this is the gauge Jay Holecamp has made for a few years now. Here's his webpage outside ebay:
Jay Holecamp Overdrive Gauges Looks like the same price too.

I bought one a while back when I was having overdrive troubles, it arrived quickly and was well made. You might be able to cobble one together for less money, but unless you know the parts I didn't think it was worth the effort.

you can build your own unit for about $20-$30 in parts. mcmaster's sells glycerin filled guages for $18, you can use an old brake hose and some spare fittings to make the connections. there is a good article on this floating on the internet under tr6 j-type overdrive rebuild or similar.

For an A-type, the fitting for the pressure gauge needs to duplicate the plug for the operating valve, which is not an ordinary fitting.

Unless you have a rounded-off plug handy, or lots of time to waste (and access to a lathe), I'd say the one on eBay is worth getting. Just the plug is $29 @ TRF.

But the eBay seller (who I think maybe is Jay Holecamp) lists them all the time, so no particular need to jump on this one.
