Od fluid level

100-4. How do I check the fluid level in the OD/ tranny? With the filler plug out there is nothing to indicate what the level should be. I know the recommended fluids in the handbook are going to be difficult to find, what are you using?

Hey Rossco,
You must have a BN1 with the 3 speed gear box as the BN2 with the 4 speed has a small dipstick on top of the gearbox body that is accessible when you pull back the carpet and pull out the rubber access plug. I believe - and that is the operative word - the BN1 gearbox has a plug on top that you screw out to refill the unit and fill to the bottom of the threads. I recall there is a small metal access door on your gearbox tunnel cover that yu slide open for access to the plug. This is what the actual "Owners Handbook" says on page 29. The repair manuals are a little vague on the BN1 filler plug info. Obviously you drain it with the screw in plug on the bottom/side of the gearbox. As to the correct oil to use most recommend a non detergent 30 wt oil. I actually run 40 wt non detergent which work good. You don't want the detergent as that tends to 'foam' and not needed in a tranny/OD.
Regards,
Mike

Mike. You're right on about the BN-1 version. Have the tunnel cover out so access is no problem. I had read something about the dipstick that I don't have so I wanted to be certain the level was just to the bottom of the plug opening. I'll get the non-detergent type and thanks for the quick answer.

Topped the level with 30# non-detergent oil. OD still not working. Took it out on the street and by hand manipulating the lever I induced the car to shift into OD. It wouldn't maintain if I released the lever. Is my next step an adjustment to the lever?
