O/d Trans. questions

I was given an od transmission from a widow. She doesn't know what year B the trans is from. How do I identify it and I hear that older ones won't well in a rubber bumper B.
Any thoughts or comments?

Check the OD part of the unit. If it is a Type D it is an early type used through 1967. If it is an LH, it is used from 1968 on. The LH will fit any 68B or later, including rubber bumper.
 
I heard from the PO of my '76 MGB that the OD unit can be added onto a transmission and not have to change the drive shaft. Is this true? or is there something unknown here...
 
If we can believe the Moss/VB catalog, the driveshafts are the same-- O/D and non-O/D for 1968 on. This means the late model 4 speed/4 synchro with the LH type O/D. I will be finding out for sure in the next week when mine goes back into my '79.

so, can you add the O/D unit onto a non-O/D tranny? Or does it require the entire tranny to be replaced?

As far as I know, you only have to replace the mainshaft with the shorter O/D version (and add the O/D with the adapters, etc). The layshaft remains the same...

Oops, sorry I meant to say mainshaft. It's been one of those days.

On a side note, you can buy an overdrive kit with everything you need to convert a non-OD transmission to an OD unit.
 
oo... anyone have experience with the OD kits? I assume you'll have to remove the tranny to put it on, huh...
 
Yes, tranny out which also means engine out, unless you cut away the transmission crossmember. The OD kit should give no problems as it isn't made up of any special parts. It's just a group of all the parts that are different between an OD tranny and a non-OD one. If you want OD and your transmission is in very good condition, the kit is the way to go. If your transmission is tired, just buy a complete OD transmission. That way you can drive your non-OD unit while you get the OD unit ready, and there is no down time.

I have an early 3-sync OD transmission that I plan to pull apart, and then mate the OD unit to my "original to car" non-OD unit, which is also in excellent rebuilt condition.
