well didn't get much done this weekend. the tranny is still in there but I've got to a point where I may be able to get it out within the next week or so. actually I have family coming in on friday, and I'm flip flopping crews this week so I will work all day tomorrow and then noon to midnight tuesday through thursday and then I have friday off, so I may get it done then.

anyway, yesterday was taken up by doing maintenence on my infiniti, oil change and tire rotation, the oil filter on that car is tiny, and the oil an is practicaly a panel, but at least they were right next to eachother. so I'm good until I hit 50K and then I'll take her to the dealer for a major service.

well, back to the subject at hand. I am going to need an air chisel I bought a 1/2 cold steel carbon chisel and those dang heater box screws are impervious to my (lack of) strength. its about 50 degrees outside, and I'm sweatin like its 100. but anyway, I got a little bored of the front of the car so I turned my attention to the rear. I got all of the lights and the rear bumpers off. its funny but the back up lights were not connected. I took off the plate holder and I also removed the trunk lid and hinges. it all started with dropping the gas tank. so I jacked up the rear, put it on stands, and then I removed the drain plug, but nothing happened. odd, I thought, 8 years ago I filled the tank before I put it iin storage, where did all the gas go? so to be safe I put the plug back in, and started to remove the bolts. I even removed the fuel line and a drizzle of gas came out but nothing else. so I put a jack under the tank before taking the last couple bolts out and everything went smothly. until I released the pressure on the jack, the tank came crashing down FULL of gas!!! I was like WTF I dragged the tank out from under the car, and dumped the contents into a bucket, and the stuff pored out in many different colors ranging from orange to black with chunks of black stuff. so I'm probably going to either purchase a new tank, or get one made. one for slightly more fuel capacity, and if I buy a new one it will be to avoid the whole tank cleaning. when I figure out what I'm gonna do with it, I'll probably give it away. so in closing not much this weekend, but got a lot done in a little time. with my working hours shifting temporarily, and family coming to town, I may not get much done the next week or two, but I will do what I can. if I can get my engine sold, I will be able to get some pnumatic tools to get some more progress done but untill then, I gotta work around the areas where I have some problem bolts. have a good week everybody.

Lemme know after you do it when you need a new heater box - I have several good used ones that don't have the little screw holes chewed up.

well, the box is GTG, its the screws holding it down which are being a pig. I may go heaterless, or see what the BWMs are packing and I might use that. its all just speculative at the moment, but once I get my hands of it I will see what is up. i've still got lots of work ahead of me.

Hi Adam,

This may be a dumb question, but are you using a posidrive on those heater screws? I experienced many stripped out, immovable screw heads before I learned the difference between posidrive and phillips head. Now that I have a posidrive, even the old stripped out screws come out without too much effort.

If the posdrive thing is not your issue, you may consider trying a pair of vise grips on the heads of those screws. You may also consider drilling out the screws. An air chisel seems extreme to me.

Just my $.02.

And mine as well, drill the heads off, they soft, remove heater box, then use vice grips.

not enough room to turn vise grips. so I'm committed to the detructive removal process, its an amazing stress relief to go agro on a bolt or two every now and then, especially since I have to kinda be careful with the rest of it.

you could wait till you get the tranny out ...you should them be able to get to the bottom of those screws , and loosen them up some with just a worry or two with your chisel. you will want new screws anyhow. stainless sheetmetal screws are what i used.

I'm gonna move the battery to the rear, so that whole area where the battery and heater box are is going to be cut out. so I'm gonna have to make a new heating system anyway to get air to the cockpit and defroster.
