Not just another throw out bearing pin question

Ok maybe it is just another un exciting question...

I had an MG guy who came very highly recommended go through the transmission on my BJ7. It's been a while since he worked on it but as I recall he put new bushes in the throw-out bearing when he installed the new bearing.

I'm finally getting around to installing and I noticed that the pin that holds the shaft in place isn't all the way in. See picture. Using a mirror I can see that it passed through the shaft and stops flush with the shaft, not flush with the outer casing that holds the shaft. It's a tapered pin, right? I gave it a couple of whacks with a hammer and it didn't move. Should it move another 1/8th inch to come flush with the casing? How hard can, or should, one hit that pin?

From all the ones I have looked at that side of the pin is nearly flush with the clutch fork surface, I say nearly flush as it has a head on it. The other side of the fork has the pin extending as it is longer than the fork body where it is installed. To be installed properly it should be in further but it probably doesn't matter as it seems to be firmly in place.

I didn't purchase a new shaft with pin. I'm starting to think that my MG mechanic may have used an incorrect pin. I'm not comfortable leaving it as is. It's in tight but if it's incorrect will it stay put. I haven't tried to pull the pin yet. I'll give it a go.
