I know it isn't really car related, other than it is an internal combustion engine.

MAN Diesel formerly B&W, and the company I work for, has just secured an order for eight of these enormous engines rated at 115000 BHP. They are 14 cylinders with a bore of 98cm (38.6 inch) and a stroke of 266cm (104.7 inch) making a displacement of 28090 liters and weigh 2300 tons

115000/28090 = 4.09 BHP/Ltr. seems a bit low...

What are these to be used for?

Well since HP is torque * rpm, and the engine will be turning at a quite lazy 104 rpm, the HP is quite reasonable. The low rpms of diesel engines is the reason that hp figures for diesels are usually much lower than gasoline engines.

According to the press release they will be used for container ships.

Slightly oversize I'd say.

Considering the fact that a diesel locomotive engine puts out a mere 6000 hp.
