I am in the process of buying a 1949 Austin A10 Devon.

It has a small 1200cc motor. I am thinking of swapping that out for either an MGB or TR3/4 motor and tranny.

Any suggestions, comments or insights?

Well, my first suggestion would be to call it an A40 Devon. That motor is an early version of the later BMC B series engines such as are found in the MGB, so there's at least a familial connection there.

A later B series engine could probably be used with little trouble, as Eric points out that should be what you have in there, so if parts are tough to come by a 1500cc engine from an Autin A55 or A60 or a similar Farina model should fit.
I would be cautious about going to the much more powerful later versions unless you plan to improve the brakes and roadholding of your car.
Simon.
