Not a good day.

Well ........... I`v went a done it again! Rebuilding my Wiper motor, had it all apart and was cleaning the junk off of the winding {where the brush holders are attached}. Holding it over the balcony {NOT a good thing} spraying it with de greaser and lo and behold fumble fingers dropped it! Then tried to recover but the near miss caused it to tumble and spin rapidly towards the weed patch {luckily it landed in the weeds in the dirt and NOT on the cement. BUT .... upon recovery, only to discover the brush holders had become disloged and seperated from the winding assembly and LOST in the weeds {or somewhere as yet undiscovered}. Probably NEVER to be seen again! Although I have spent the better part of the day looking! Aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Mannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn! Why me?
I did manage to get another wiper motor assembly off of ebay for $42.00 after including shipping. I am JUST HOPING it has the parts {Brush holders and spring} I need.
Needless to say ... this is one of the most STUPID things I have done in recent times! I hope I get smarter soon! I can`t afford myself much longer! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/lol.gif

Wait till you try to figure out how to re-assemble it all.

Kerry - how's about getting a big magnet from Walmart, Home Depot, etc., then slowly moving it through that weed patch.

Might find the missing parts - and some other surprises ...

At least you have a nice pair of usable windscreen squirters!

Don:
Re assembly will be a "Walk in the park" {at least to me}! If and when I get the rest of the parts I need to do a re assembly! The original intention was to repair a frayed park wire on the dang thing, but bieng the perfectionist I am I HAD to decide to remove all of the old grease and re lube ALL of the mechanisims and bushings. Good intentions led to my delema! NOW to WAIT for an ebayer to send me the wiper motor assembly I bought.

Tom:
Thats not a bad idea. I`m wondering IF wallyworld or Home depot has a real huge magnet. I`ll be going in tomorrow to have a look see.
Thanks for the suggestion.

I purchased one there (Home Depot) that looks sort of like a squeegee (sp?)on a broomstick. You drag it on the ground like a vacuum sweeper. It's interesting to see all the magnetic things you pick up...even some rocks are magnetic.

Kerry- I feel yer pain!

The brushes and springs all SPRANG out
of my new GM alternator when I tool it
apart to powder coat parts of it.

Thankfully, I was on the living room sofa
with a white tile floor under me.

good luck! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nopity.gif

Did you get them picked up before the Mrs. saw them lying on her furniture? hope so!

Dude, that make me feel sooooooooooo much better. It sounds EXACTLY like something I would do. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

I have learned to try and disassemble little bits inside a box if possible. The lesson was taught while taking apart a TR3 control head. I was going along smoothly until I removes a few small brass bolts, then several springs, and other assorted piece were all over the floor. Fortunately I had a diagram and a list of the parts, so I knew when I could stop searching the floor. The box tends to limit the distance the parts travel, making the search easier.

Ah yes, the infamous Jesus spring ...

Sorry to hear your woes, Kerry. I like the box idea though -- may have to try that myself the next time. I always seem to forget that the bits really do come all apart when the last bolt is removed... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Update:
As of nightfall, even tho` I did manage to purchase a magnet on a stick and search multiple times through the area I THOUGHT, these little {experlatives here} could have been, obviously they are not where I figured they would be, or they are NOT magnetic. {they did look to be steel though, NOT brass} I guess it is possible they are stainless but one wouldn`t think so. I will dilligently continue an expanded search tomorrow and or until the ebay motor shows up. Normally I would have cleaned the part in a container in the grarge {who was it that said did I get them picked up before the misses saw them,} {Ron}. Well He was right, she was gone and I was working on newspaper on the kitchen table and steped out the backdoor to spray this part off with de greaser, when FUMBLE FINGERS went into action! Gadzooks, I feel lame! I about had heart failure when I saw the price of a new motor from Moss. HOLY MOLY, the thing must be made of Gold! Fabricating Tiny parts is NOT my cuppa but I may even give that a go. Seems the faster I go the further behind I get. Just NOT my day!

If you're anywhere near SLC, might be worth looking up Mark Bradakis. I'll bet he's got an old wiper motor laying around, and would be willing to part with it for less than you paid on eBay.

Ooh, last time I did that it was with the syncro springs. So that is why the manual said to wrap the selector with a rag before taking it apart! Springs and balls launched themselves at rocket speed through the window and over to the neighbors. To make it worse when I put it back together I did the same thing only with the NEW parts. Some day we we will learn......

Kerry,

I rebuilt a TR3 DR2 wiper motor a few years ago with a Lucas rebuild kit. I know I saved at least one of the old brush holders and maybe the tension spring that goes between them. It's buried in a box within a box somewhere. I can mail them if it turns out you need them...once I find 'em!

Too bad you can't still get the Lucas brush kit.

What a bummer. I hope the Ebay wiper motor is useable. For what it's worth, I rebuild mine a few months ago and took a fair number of pictures. There's quite a few so they would be too big to post them all here. If you need them, I'll zip them up and email them to you.

Ron

Ron:
The W.W. motor is fairly straight forward and simple {at least to me} But IF i do run into diffaculties I will deffinately P.M. you for those pics
Thanks for the offer
Kerry

If you can't get your parts, I know a guy in VT with several good motors. Let me know.
