Don - I think you hit the nail on the head. If we're physically involved in *making* something, we really appreciate it.

If we pay someone to do it for us, maybe we appreciate it - and value it - less.

Have your kids work with you - Possible result: better appreciation for work.
Just give your kids stuff - Possible result: they keep expecting more gifts.

Just my two shekels.

Oh my goodness, I forgot about churning butter! That was another job for us kids. Large square glass jugs with a hand crank turning wooden paddles. There must have been 4 of those churns in Grand mothers kitchen.
and 5 of us kids doing the cranking! Butter milk was grand pops favorite drink. At the same time we made cottage cheese. It was nothing to see 12 to 14 people at the table, as they fed the helpers at the same time. Those days are gone forever, but the memories live on. PJ
I forgot to add, no one came into nannies kitchen before removing muddy boots and shoes and washing up before coming to the table. She was a stickler for the men having their hair combed also! :highly_amused:
