Don - I think you hit the nail on the head. If we're physically involved in *making* something, we really appreciate it.
If we pay someone to do it for us, maybe we appreciate it - and value it - less.
Have your kids work with you - Possible result: better appreciation for work.
Just give your kids stuff - Possible result: they keep expecting more gifts.
