no starting

hey there. all of that is true and the starter was after it quit running. i have no spark. kind of wondering about the starter, the wiring and such. but i had it turning over with new starter. at some point i had spark and it is now gone.

Bump - you getting anywhere?

hi there. have spark but still not running. i did change to a new electronic ignition system, distributor and all. new starter back in. sounds like it wants to go, but......doesn't. can you static time electronic ignition? i have a funny feeling the timing is off. but if it isn't running, how do you set timing?

You can get it close....pull the plugs (at least #1), crank with your thumb over the plug hole until it goees "poof" and let off. See where the timing mark is, should be close to the pointer, rotate by hand until it lines up, pull the cap, see if the rotor is pointing at #1 plug wire, then look at the pickup. If an optic with hall-effect, the window or bar should be at the pickup unit. Rotate housing until it is. Static TDC. Plug in, cap on, and try it.

Can an MGB dizzy be 180 deg out? Can't imagine the timing would be lost.

Or the plug wires all off by one....or the distributor dropped on twisted to retard....as long as this has been going on, and as much stuff that's been changed, always a good idea to sort out WHERE it is NOW.

Been reading the thread - I have the same issues as Marco. '72 MGB, started running rough, then died. Points style dizzy was shelled out, so I borrowed an electronic ignition setup from a friend. Unfortunately, in my haste to swap the units, I pulled the plug wires off the old dizzy before marking the sequence (IDIOT ROOKIE MISTAKE!!!). Friend and I guessed as best we could, cranked the engine, got two backfires and then nothing. That was in March, and I haven't got it running since. I've got no spark to the plug wires, but am scared to do all the static timing tests with the ignition on and the new Pertronix EI dizzy not running - Pertronix and others claim that will burn out the unit. What do the smarter/wiser members think about a possible slipped timing chain? The engine in this car was rebuilt about 10,000 miles back, so I would have a hard time believing that was the problem. And I REALLY don't want to pull the front end of the engine apart just to see if the timing marks on the sprockets line up.

Any help would be appreciated. Marco - have you made any progress sine your last post?
