Recently had my tach rebuilt by nisonger to have it accept a petronix unit it eliminates the loop ,my car was converted to negative ground yrs ago and not sure what the mechanic did ,I connected the wire from the tach to the neg side of the coil and connected the petonix as told to do red to + and black o - nothing ,looking at the switch here is no lead coming from the the # 2 post should I run a wire from it to the + side of the coil .Now does the black and white wire from the cut off switch go to the neg side or pos side thiif for a bj8,fuel pump works as well as the ignition light switch

SOMTHING very wrong here tach can not operate with out the pik up loop..?????

their using a new circuit board with only one wire coming out the back that is connected to the neg side of the coil wish I knew how to paste their web site go to it to see what I'm talking about

Why would every other modern electronic tach not require this loop then? If I was rebuilding a tach this is the first thing I would want to eliminate, as it seems like a work around to a design problem.

Been a day or two since I converted mine. However:

The Smiths & British Jaeger RV Series "Loop Tachs" used in many of these vehicles are not truly compatible with any electronic ignition systems. To resolve this problem, Nisonger has developed new circuitry that eliminates the Loop Assembly and allows these Tachometers to be used with virtually any electronic or points ignition systems

But here is how They have done it using a new circuit board which eliminates the loop:applause:

I think this statement is a bit disingenuous. I have been running Pertronix (pos. grnd.) with a stock unmodified Smiths tach. for 80K miles or so. The tach. is spot on and, except for some occasional bounce on high-revving--which I believe happened even before I installed the Pertronix--the tach's operation is nominal. I don't dispute that some installations with some electronic ignition systems may be problematic, but this statement implies all will have a problem, and at least in one instance that is not true.

Interesting, how much did it cost to have the tach rebuilt? If you don't mind me asking. I have a friend that needs his tach rebuilt, plus he wants to add a Pertronix as well.
Thanks for responding.

Yeah me too Bob, I think that is just sales pitch $$$$$

Nothing wrong doing it the old way unless you forget to reverse the loop!-:friendly_wink:

my reason for doing this is because my tach needed to be rebuilt because for some reason it wouldn't go over 2000 rpms so I figured I go all the way ,I think I know what my prob is I might be wrong though where they say to put a + 12 volts I put the gas gauge wire as the way it was in the original

I don't recall for sure, but I think I put two loops around the inductive pickup on the tach after I installed Pertronix. Think maybe 'stock' is one loop--anybody know?

Yes Bob in some cases an extra loop was requied do not know why--

Success spoke with Peter from Nisonger the loop is still needed but not attached to the tach thanks all for your help

Needed but "not attached to the tach"?? Where do you need to place it? My tach worked great before doing a frame-up and I had converted to negative ground and Pertronix. Now it cuts out at about 2k RPM. The Loop wasn't changed between engine rebuild.
