So three weeks ago when I first took apart my healey, I made a mistake when choosing my location to do the work. I took apart the rear end, took out the differential and drive shaft. Tonight, I'm ready to put her all back together. I have a new bearing kit for ear wheel, diff gasket, ujoints.
My problem: When I took it apart, I only planned to take the axel shafts out 6 inches. I'm doing this in a cramped storage garage, not wide enough to roll the entire car. Now I have this guy on jack stands, with maybe 20 inches on one side. This isn't enough to get the axel shaft out to put the new seal in and bearings, etc.
What I want to do:
replace the ujoints on the bench.
put the new differential in with the gasket, secure it together.
replace the bearings on one side, gasket, o ring. Put one side together (the side I have enough room to remove the axel shaft.
put both axel shafts back in, put both tires on for insurance.
lower the car in the front, support the rear just by the differential on a rolling jack.
roll the car using this rolling jack
put the other side together (with the necessary clearance).
put gear oil in the whole thing.
Will this work?I know it's not the best method, but I'm out of ideas here. Can I take the flange off the outside of the axel shaft? I think it's a taper and on there very good.
