bled the clutch till it is working well...
tried to drive in first and it doesnt work
anymore ; (
put it in 2nd, started it up and went for a nice
3 minute drive....no prob...still no clutch though...
doesnt sound good for first though...any ideas?

You probably do not want to hear this but..

Sounds like you need to go ahead and pull the engine and replace the clutch and see what is wrong with the tranny. They are fairly easy to rebuild and you can pick up ribcases pretty cheap. I have one that was usuable, but needs new 2/3 syncros, and it pops out of fourth on the overrun.

What do you mean exactly when you say there is no first gear? Sometimes the gears line up just right that first is hard to get into because of the straight cut gears. Since you don't have a clutch it is a little tougher but try rocking the car back and forth while pushing the gear shift lever into 1st. Do you have reverse? It uses the same slider gear and laygear "gear" as first so if reverse works but you don’t have 1st, then there is a problem with the springs and detents in the slider gear or the shift fork rod. I highly doubt the slider gear because it usually locks up the transmission in 1st when that happens. Have you checked the oil in the tranny yet? Sorry for asking more question than giving answers.

Chris...i was using first to try and break loose my clutch...yesterday when i went down the road in first my car would learch and kinda felt like a flat or something, and was noisy in a bad sorta way....i got back to the house and tried first and it feels in but it only makes alittle wwrrrrrr noise and doesnt engage anymore...sooo...
being me i tried second gear and went on a quite enjoyable little 3 minute ride.....ran well!
my clutch is still stuck and first is toast but everything felt good otherwise......zimmy
i think reverse still works, not positive though

i put it in first and tried to push it and it makes a clink kinda sound like somethings loose etc.....

Pull the darn engine, free the clutch, etc etc. and do the needful to the transmission.

i plan to jack, but im kinda wandering what its gonna cost me...i dont want my motor out more than a couple days as i tend to forget exactly how everything goes and want to get my finances ready for the adventure.....
im hoping someone with a similar problem would be able to give me an idea whats wrong....
it takes a lot of planning and money for some of these projects and alot of us dont have money trees eh..
can i get some starters?; )..zimmy

Darn right, funds always a prob with a wife around watching watching.

27 bolts to pull engine and tranny. Engine runs, good. Replace clutch disk hmmm. Well about $50. Trans parts, not as familure with all that stuff. Maybe tony or someone has a useable one that is available reasonable. Understand Tony is going to Memphis before too long??

Comments from Tranny rebuilders, what broke?? 74 is a smooth case? A ribed case will even fit, as I remember the push rod on the clutch cyl needs extended 1/4 inch is all and you use the 1275 fork. oh yea a new throwout bearing would also be in order $20 bucks.

From what you've discribed I'd have to say you broke a tooth on either the lay gear or first. It should make a similar noise in reverse as well. I've broken both and it will still move if you only broke 1 or 2 teeth. If you don't run it anymore you may be able to save the mating gear. The laygear is a lot more expensive than 1st. You'll obviosly want to do all the normal stuff like like bearings and syncros as well.

Jack 74 is a ribby, we got the smoothies.

Zimmy Let us know if you have tried reverse?
Rebuilding them properly if you have never done
one can cost as much as good used one.

But be careful buying a used one because there is
a reason they are being sold. I have a decent used
that hops out of first at about 1700 rpm, but the
shipping wouldn't make it worth it.

sorry, don't think that I helped much

weel it appears my starter is stuck from yesterdays work...
not too worried about that.....so without it running...
in N the car rolls fine,
1st appears to be going in now but maybe isnt really as before...sometimes it works but rattles the car/\/\/\/\
R feel strong when rocking the car backwards...appears to work fine.....
any help?

If you continue to "drive" it you'll cost yourself MORE money. Time to pull it and go thru the whole tranny.
